It’s time to check state fishing laws

Fall stocked trout can still be found.  Open water fishing season began Wednesday, and this week, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife starts its open water fishing season previews. In the coming weeks, the Fisheries Division will highlight one of the seven regions in Maine, starting with southern Maine. The previews will be included in the Outdoors Report, which is written by DIF&W biologists.

Get a edge on stocked trout, all ready for anglers

The DIF&W fisheries staff have recently completed a second winter of surveying select lakes and ponds in the central and southern Maine region that are stocked with fall-yearling brook trout. These surveys have shown that ice anglers catch up to 80 percent of the fall-stocked brook trout.

This means a number of stocked trout are around for open water anglers as soon as the ice goes off these waters. Anglers can improve their chances of finding these hold-over trout by using boats, canoes or kayaks in order to fish areas away from access areas.

Here are a few of the sure to be hot spots in the Fryeburg vicinity area that are ready and waiting as soon as ice out.

Many of the fall-stocked ponds will be stocked with brook trout in late April and early May. The spring-stocked brookies, while not as large as the fall yearling trout, are of legal length or larger.

BRIDGTON (AP) -- Authorities say a second suspect has been arrested in Bridgton in connection with Friday's robbery of the Bangor Savings Bank branch in Cornish.

The York County Sheriff's Department says 22-year-old Matthew Jarvinen of Bridgton was taken into custody Monday on charges of bank robbery and violation of probation.

Arrested Friday evening on similar charges was Jeremy Chadwick-Flynn, who's also 22 and from Bridgton.

The two suspects are being held in the York County Jail.

YORK (NEWS CENTER) -- The town of York's Board of Selectmen have voted unanimously to hire an engineering firm that will look further into the York toll plaza's condition.

Last year the town set aside more than $37,000 they might need in order to fight the Maine Turnpike Authority. The vote allows $13,000 of that to be spent on the town's personal engineering review to compare to MTA's.

MTA says the plaza was built in wetlands and is sinking. They also say it's not built to withstand the amount of traffic that travels through the tolls.

In the meantime, they've identified four different sites for a new plaza, all include the taking of land, and in some cases, homes.

Townspeople say they agree it should be renovated, but not moved.

The engineering firm the town will work with is Pennoni Associates, based out of Philadelphia.

Maine's High Court Sides With Poland Spring

A small western Maine town is being eyed as a possible site for a new wind farm development.

Todd Presson, chief operating officer of the Massachusetts-based company, said another six or seven towers could be built on an adjacent 300 acres owned by the town.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston reported that about 60 residents turned out at a meeting last week to hear company officials lay out their plans. The company is also in the early stages of planning a six- to 12-turbine project in the nearby town of Woodstock.

Maine's highest court has sided with the parent company of Poland Spring in the bottled water company's efforts to expand its operations in western Maine.

In its unanimous ruling Thursday, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court vacated a lower court ruling that prevented Nestle Waters North America Inc. from building a water load out facility in Fryeburg.

The decision is the latest step in Poland Spring's efforts to extract water from aquifers in the town of Denmark and pipe it to Fryeburg.

Once there, the water would be stored in a silo and loaded into water transport trucks for delivery to Poland Spring's bottling plant.
